Carles Puigdemont, the former president of Catalonia is expected to contest in the Parliament elections that will take place on May 2019. This was confirmed by Puigdemont’s political party which is known as Junts per Catalunya. Puigdemont also posted on Twitter that this will be his moment to take a big step to make aware of the independence right of the Catalons on international level. At present he is under self-imposed exile and may get arrested on returning to his country.
According to the media, a person must be the citizen of Spain and also be settled in the same place in order to contest in the elections. The electoral board will also give a certain time period for the candidate to get seat in European Parliament. The arrest warrant for Carles Puigdemont has been taken off by the Spanish court after a verdict from German court said that he can be handed over to Spain for a separate accusation.
