The proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall has got some fund, at least an assurance from president Donald Trump, who said the money saved from new NAFTA (USMCA) deal will be diverted towards it.
Without any evidence Trump claimed Mexico will be paying for the wall.
USMCA is United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
The U.S.-Mexico border wall requires $5 billion fund and in a tweet the president said Mexico is going to pay for it.
He further added that the new NAFTA deal is comparatively less costly and it is better than the old NAFTA.
I often stated, “One way or the other, Mexico is going to pay for the Wall.” This has never changed. Our new deal with Mexico (and Canada), the USMCA, is so much better than the old, very costly & anti-USA NAFTA deal, that just by the money we save, MEXICO IS PAYING FOR THE WALL!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 13, 2018
However, Democrats have not yet supported the USCMA in the current form and have urged to include in it more enforceable labor standards.
It is not yet clear how the changes in new NAFTA would be enforced like the auto workers in Mexico will get better wages. Even if Mexico manages to implement, it is not known how such arrangements are connected to number of dollars in the U.S. Treasury.
Meanwhile, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrado and his predecessor Enrique Pena Nieto have refused to be funding for the border wall.
