Bill Banning Abortion Passed By Alabama

The controversial bill that bans abortion was passed by the Alabama state Senate. The bill had been passed earlier this month in Alabama’s House of Representatives with an overwhelming majority of 74-3.

This new abortion bill is set to be the strictest such US law and has triggered a huge row. The bill will not go to Republican Governor Kay Ivey, who is seen as a strong opponent of abortion. However, she has not said if she will sign the bill or not.

Abortion was legalized in the US after a landmark Supreme Court ruling in the year 1973. Activists who are supporting the abortion bill hope that it will challenge this Supreme Court ruling. As per the bill, abortion will now be allowed only under certain circumstances, especially when the mother’s life is at risk.

The National Organization for Women has termed the ban “unconstitutional” and said it was “a transparent effort to drum up political support for anti-abortion candidates in upcoming elections”.
