US Attorney General William Barr has assigned John Durhan, the US attorney in Conneticut to examine the origins of the Russia investigation. According to media reports, Darr has asked Durham to determine if the collection of intelligence on the Trump campaign was lawful.
President Donald Trump has been calling for such an investigation for a long time. Trump had said that the Russian inquiry was a ‘witch hunt’ by his opponents to defame him. Many critics of Barr have accused him of ordering this review on the behest of the President and not in the interests of US Justice.
Last month, Barr had told members of Congress that he believed “spying did occur” on the Trump campaign in 2016. He had also said “The question is whether it was adequately predicated. And I’m not suggesting that it wasn’t adequately predicated. But I need to explore that.”
While Barr had not given many details, he did say that he was gathering a team that will look into the origins of the investigation led by special counsel Rober Mueller.
