Japanese Emperor Naruhito officially began his reign Wednesday and in his brief public address he pledged to become symbol of unity.

The 59-year-old succeeds his 85-year-old father Akihito, who becomes the first emperor in the country to stand down in more than 200 years. He was abdicated citing failing health and old age.

Akihito had endangered himself to may through interactions with people suffering from disease and disaster.

Emperor Naruhito pledged the same devotion like his father to Japanese people.

He said, “I swear that I will reflect deeply on the course followed by the Emperor Emeritus… and fulfil my responsibility as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people of Japan.”

Akihito’s emperor came to an end at the stroke of midnight on the night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The new Reiwa era has begun.

The new emperor as well as his former diplomat wife is expected to be more modern in outlook.

In 2017 the emperor said, “I would like to learn various things from the past while also pursuing the ideal role that the Imperial Family should take in the future.”

The Oxford-educated Emperor and Harvard and Oxford-educated Empress Masako married in 1993.

Both have one girl child, the 2001-born Princess Aiko. As women are prohibited from inheriting the throne in Japan, the Empress struggled pressure to produce a male heir.
