Should Trump meet Pakistan PM Imran Khan to reset relations with Afghanistan

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham feels it is necessary for President Trump to meet Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to reset relations and push for a peaceful settlement in Afghanistan.

The comments of Graham comes at such a time when Washington wants to reach an agreement with the Taliban and bring to end the 17 years of war in Afghanistan.

Graham is a supporter of Trump and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. He said Imran Khan too is in support for a peace agreement in Afghanistan and hence a meeting with him will leave the president more enthusiastic about the region.

He added, “With Prime Minister Khan we have a unique opportunity to change our relationship.”

Graham continued saying that earlier the relationship was transactional and now it should be replaced with strategic engagement.

Trump earlier announced to be withdrawing troops from Afghanistan and to have a peace agreement with the Taliban.

However, Trump has refused to talk directly to the Afghan government.

Currently there are about 5,000 US troops in Afghanistan and withdrawal means a change in the policy of Washington towards the country.

The announcement of Trump has caused alarm in Kabul as the Afghan forces are struggling to hold back Taliban insurgency.
